I am really excited about this art. I am fascinated by how pieces of hockey equipment could be reused to create such beautiful work. I can honestly say that I have never thought of hockey equipment as beautiful. What an awesome way to take materials designed for one purpose and turn them into something completely different.

    Liss Platt – Puck Painting

    Liss Platt – Puck Painting

The puck paintings (click the link above) are made by shooting hockey pucks at a white, goal-size (4’ x 6’) surface. Permission by the artist to post has been granted.  The puck rubber leaves different marks based on the speed and angle of the shot, and compositions are determined by building up the density of shots in particular areas of the painting’s surface.

Think about these questions about the art work.  Respond (by clicking REPLY) and share your thoughts.  The artist, Liss Platt, will be responding to questions and replying to your posts.

How do they get the paint on the pucks?

    • hdoyle0483 12:02 pm on October 31, 2013 Permalink

Wouldn’t there be a whole bunch of paint on the ice after he shot the puck?

    • bjenkins4823 12:04 pm on October 31, 2013 Permalink

i would name the peace of art. ( shots of Canada) the red is for the maple leaf.

    • jmontgom1923 12:05 pm on October 31, 2013 Permalink

this makes me feel swarmed and joyful

    • bjenkins4823 12:08 pm on October 31, 2013 Permalink

you can dunk the pucks in red paint and put it on the ice and then take a slap shot at the paper

    • evarty3273 12:09 pm on October 31, 2013 Permalink

If i was the artist of this piece of art i would of used a piece of paper. then get
10 ten hockey sticks with paint on the tip and throw the stick at the paper.

    • bjenkins4823 12:10 pm on October 31, 2013 Permalink

ya but you would make sure the most of the paint if off the pucks

    • bjenkins4823 12:12 pm on October 31, 2013 Permalink

the work of art makes me feel happy and joyful like the Canada flag

    • vsears1922 12:14 pm on October 31, 2013 Permalink

it makes me feel like i am warm and that i am in the Canada flag

    • evarty3273 12:15 pm on October 31, 2013 Permalink

if i could rename the piece of art i would name it (maple leaf red) because the red makes me think about the Canada flag. it makes me think about the Canada flag because the leaf on the flag is red .

The art reminds me of driving 6 and a half hours to my aunts house so much country and a beautiful setting…

    • garmstro6289 12:21 pm on October 31, 2013 Permalink

the art is cool because the 3rd one looks like a laundry mat.

    • bjenkins4823 8:51 pm on October 31, 2013 Permalink

most of the paint will be off the puck so the ice will not turn red

    • atisma3937 11:48 am on November 1, 2013 Permalink

i think its about hockey and having fun

    • Liss Platt 12:43 pm on November 1, 2013 Permalink

The pucks are painted with spray paint which is dried before the shots are taken. The force of the shot transfers some of the paint, and the puck rubber, onto the canvas.

    • Liss Platt 12:46 pm on November 1, 2013 Permalink

That is an excellent idea – sticks could make very interesting marks, and we don’t usually see the marks made by sticks (because they mostly come in contact with the ice). Note that the puck paintings are made on a thick board that has been painted with many layers of white paint – anything thinner would be destroyed by the puck hitting it.

    • yimran0639 4:59 pm on November 1, 2013 Permalink

Where did you get this idea Ms.Platt?

    • mgallach4020 2:18 pm on November 4, 2013 Permalink

The paint and rubber transfer to the painting surface when the puck strikes it. If you play hockey you can see marks like this on the boards – caused by the pucks as people play.

      so cool!
