The Hockey Sweater read by The Hamilton Bulldogs (and Bruiser)!

Mike Condon (Goalie), Morgan Ellis (Defenceman), Greg Pateryn (Defenceman), Darren Dietz (Defenceman), and Bruiser read this year’s story for the Hamilton Bulldogs Literacy Game in partnership with the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board. This is the fourth year that the players of the team and have read our featured story.

    • jmowatt4259 12:58 pm on October 23, 2014 Permalink

i think that boy was so focessed on what other people think then focessing on whats important and that is the true joy of playing hockey of scoring a goal or getting an assist or meeting one of your true fans just stepping on the ice is a privilidge and he does not deserve to wear any jersy or play in any game!!!! A true hockey player loves the game of hockey no matter what team or jersy!!

I think he was to focused on what other people would think I mean just because he has a difrent jersey doesn’t mean he can’t get treated the same. When he got the sweater he hated it he thought to much about what other people would think and “betraying” his team. When he got to the game he got called off just beacuse he had a difrent jersey. When he could have gone on he got called off because there were to many players. He broke him hockey stick in anger and the reff came over and said… Go to the church and pray to god !! So he did that. But he was still thinking about heat people would think that’s why he prayed for moths to eat up his sweater.

    • ssabti6533 9:54 am on October 29, 2014 Permalink

I think the message the story gave out was just because you have to try something new doesn’t mean you have to act the same. Just because other people wear something else doesn’t mean you have to stand in with them. You should stand out no matter if you choose to wear something else or act different. Just because there is a new trend or everyone acts the same doesn’t mean you have to! You can act the way you want to you can wear whatever you want and you shouldn’t be neglected by that! You shouldn’t need to cry about not having the same clothes or not liking the same person because in the end we’re all people who just sleep at the end of the day. We shouldn’t need to be treated differently than other people.

I think it was really sad that the boy was persuaded that to be a great hockey player he needed to have a special hockey jersey.I think these things happen because of peer pressure and if I were in his shoes I would have told them that something does not make you a better person or better at anything what really matters is if you have the skills to play if not you need to try.I think that you should believe in your self and remember you don’t need something to make you good you need to try and never give up

I think this book is telling everyone that has a dream to never give up! Even when there are obstacles you have to over come. I like that Cindy never let the blister sisters get in her way of trying out for the hockey game!

She was the underdog that wasn’t the underdog.

    • kevin sylvester 3:50 pm on November 5, 2013 Permalink

I was reading Cinderella, and I thought how silly it was that she wanted to go to a party. So I thought, “what would be a cooler life dream”? I always wanted to play hockey but, like Cindy, we didn’t have a lot of money… so all that became part of the story.

    • kevin sylvester 3:51 pm on November 5, 2013 Permalink

Splinters is a hockey insult. It means you aren’t good enough to play, so you sit on the wooden bench. You get splinters from the wood in your pants.

We are proud once again to have players of the Hamilton Bulldogs Hockey Club read this year’s Hamilton Bulldog’s Literacy Game story, The Greatest Goal, by Mike Leonetti.

What did the author use to try to make you sympathize with the character, Paul? Were they effective?

lol haha i read this book today

    • athersid0216 12:26 pm on November 8, 2012 Permalink

we read this book today and i thought it was good and i think that the author’s message is to never give up.I think that because when paul said that there is no use for canada the mom said there is still time paul didn’t belive her and paul gave up on team canada during the sumit series but team canada ended up winning.

    • egiordan5870 12:54 pm on November 8, 2012 Permalink

when we read the book today i thought the authors mesage was dont judge a team before u play , i think this because the hockey players were being to over confadent and thought they were going to smoke the soviet union but after all they were down 3 games , even though they came back to win it they could of lost because they needed to win 3 games and the soviet union had one

    • nalrasho7267 12:58 pm on November 8, 2012 Permalink

i think that the authers massge is to try your hardest beause when paul gave up he never tried to be pationt and the team tried thier hard thats how they were wining.

      hi

    • tlupton3468 2:47 pm on November 8, 2012 Permalink

The author made me sympathize , with Paul a canada hockey fan watching Canada vs the silviot union, and not having his dad, who loves hockey with him. Not being able to watch with Paul. I felt sad for Paul because I would like my family with me. And I felt happy at the end when Paul got to watch one of the games with his WHOLE family. That was a touching story that I like!

I feel SO bad for Paul. I understand that his dad is important. I think that when Paul is with his dad it makes a special moment more special!

and hockey is fun so you should wacth it.

The story is told from Paul’s point of view. It helps you relate to Paul and what he is feeling. You feel sad for him when his dad has to go away on a work trip and when Canada was losing the tournament. He had felt so confident that Canada would win but it was starting to look like the Soviet Union would win. I felt sorry for him when the coach was telling him to pass the puck and he wanted to talk to his dad but his dad was away working.

This was very heartwarming. Pauls Dad and Paul seemed to have agreat, confident relationship. To be honest, I think his dad shouldn’t have gone away!

I like how he practices with his grandpa then learns how to be a better goalie. Then he imagined himself as Jacques Plante talking to Toe Blake. Hoping he would be a great goalie ready to learn anything that would help him be a better goalie! 🙂
